Accessibility
Objective: Ensure an accessible FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ for disabled people and people with limited mobility, while facilitating accessibility across physical infrastructure, public transport and services in Qatar.
The accessibility material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:
Context
It is estimated that about 15% of the world’s population, or one billion people, experience some form of disability and that many others have specific access requirements. Ensuring that the stadiums’ physical infrastructure, public transport, accommodation, various events and services in Qatar were accessible for disabled people and people with limited mobility was critical to enable an inclusive, seamless fan experience at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
Qatar signed the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2008 and has been implementing various projects to further enhance the quality of services offered to disabled individuals in Qatar. Under the National Development Strategy (NDS) 2018-2022, Qatar sought to enhance the health and well-being of disabled people in the country by providing specialised health services and specific programmes and social services for a higher quality of life.
The wide range of infrastructure, transportation and services enhancements that were implemented in preparation for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, not only support the objectives of the NDS, but will also provide a strong legacy of greater accessibility and inclusiveness throughout the country.
