Adaptable, efficient transport solutions
Initiative description: Identifying and implementing creative temporary solutions to address the short-term spike in demand for transport during staging of the tournament.
In order to address the short-term spike in demand for transport during the tournament, creative temporary solutions have been sought. A transport plan was prepared in 2014 describing the transport provisions needed to be in place to run a successful tournament. The plan considers projected tournament travel demand and includes commitments to capture transport legacy benefits for the tournament.
We are in ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Transport and Communications regarding timing of regular replacement of buses to coincide with the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ period to allow additional buses to be in operation during the tournament.
In addition, travel management plans that will be communicated with visitors as well as residents are being developed to encourage efficient use of transportation and will include tips for optimising travel behaviours during the tournament.
School holidays have been rescheduled to coincide with the tournament with a portion of school buses to be used to supplement tournament transport services. This has been agreed to in advance with the relevant local stakeholders to ensure it is done in a manner that does not interfere with the quality of education and the delivery of the school curriculum.
Upgrades to Qatar’s metro and light rail systems are near completion, as well as enhancements to Qatar’s bus services. The Doha Metro system is now in full operation, and was heavily used by fans during the FIFA Club World Cup 2019™ and FIFA Club World Cup 2020™ tournaments.
