Sustainable building training

Initiative description: Delivering sustainable building training and facilitating knowledge-sharing for professionals involved in delivering FIFA World Cup 2022™ stadiums, training sites and overlay infrastructure construction and operation management, including FIFA, Q22 and SC staff, contractors and facility management companies.

Designing, constructing and operating stadiums in a manner that meets stringent sustainable building requirements has fostered the development of sustainability expertise in Qatar. Sharing sustainability best practices among architects, engineers and other specialists is improving the design, construction methods and operational efficiency of each stadium. These individuals are now contributing their skills and expertise to projects elsewhere in Qatar and beyond.

In support of this, the SC has hosted knowledge sharing events for contractors, designers, managers and consultants engaged in stadium development. Full and half day sessions have been hosted at stadium sites, including construction site tours followed by workshops on best practices, challenges, and solutions. To date, eight knowledge sharing events have been hosted by the SC for contractors, designers, managers and consultants engaged in stadium and training site development with participation of over 280 people in total. The success of the programme is evidenced by progressive improvement in stadium sustainability certification scores beyond their certification targets.

The SC has also collaborated with the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) to deliver Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) training sessions on sustainability certification systems applicable to the building industry, including: Energy Assessment, GSAS Design & Build, GSAS Construction Management and GSAS Operations.

Training has now extended to the sustainable operation of the completed venues. It has given facility managers and staff – who are responsible for the day-to-day management of the venues – guidance on topics such as water and energy use, and management of indoor areas.
