Josoor Institute
Initiative description: Expanding and enhancing the Josoor Institute’s professional education, training and development programmes to build the capabilities of individuals and organisations in Qatar and the MENA region, so as to deliver world-class, high-profile and sustainable sporting and leisure events.
The Josoor Institute is a Centre of Excellence for sports and events management in the Middle East and considered the education and training arm of the SC. It provides education to support the development of a future generation of professionals with the capability to lead the sports and events industry in Qatar and the MENA region. Since 2013, more than 6,000 people have benefited from Josoor Institute programmes. The work of the Institute reflects the importance given to education and building human capital as an integral part of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ preparations.
The Institute runs flagship professional diploma programmes in sports management and major events management, which were moved online in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The programmes are designed and delivered in partnership with SDA Bocconi School of Management, a leading business school with in-depth expertise in the sport and events industry. A further 89 delegates graduated from the programme in 2021, bringing the total number of graduates over four years to 404. A new intake of delegates is planned for September 2022.
In parallel, all other Josoor Institute’s activities including the leadership development programme in partnership with Leaders in Sport, volunteer training, as well as a series of webinars and panels, are now provided online for specific audiences or the greater public. Topics of online sessions included: developments in the sports and events industry amidst the pandemic and other disruptive factors, the future of education, an array of topics on sustainability, and sports diplomacy. Over 3,000 participants joined these sessions in 2020 and 2021.
In the run up to 2022, Josoor will continue to support role-specific and functional training of volunteers and workforce directly involved in the tournament, and start offering online certificates in both general and key areas of sports and event management across the region. Webinars and online sessions for the broader public interested in the latest developments in the sector will continue until 2022, and will include physical events as soon as the conditions allow.
All Josoor Institute’s sessions, as well as a strategic repository of expert case studies in sports and events management and other related topics are available on the knowledge hub. For more comprehensive reports on Josoor Institute’s activities throughout the year, please refer to Josoor’s website as well as their annual report.
The Professional Certificate in Sustainability & Major Sport Events
“I recommend the Sustainability & Major Sport Events courses for anyone involved in delivering a major sports event. Sustainability is a core success factor for any major event, and its implementation must be driven by individuals across a wide range of functions and organisations.”
Since 2019 the Institute, in partnership with the SC, Q22 and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, has been delivering its first online open course on Sustainability & Major Sport Events. As of October 2022, more than 4,000 people from over 96 countries have enrolled for the two courses.
This professional certificate addresses the critical sustainability aspects of planning and hosting large-scale sporting events and is designed to benefit individuals from different backgrounds, from event organisers to sports professionals who work with players, fans, and spectators, to those responsible for sports infrastructure, including stadiums and sports fields.
Drawing its inspiration from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy, the key objective of the course is to encourage learners to consider how a major sporting event can be used to build a legacy that improves efficiency, promotes conservation of resources and adds significant value to the host community, country, and even region. Participants learn about sustainable approaches to infrastructure and, water, waste, and air quality management, and study the long-term impact and legacy of major sporting events.
