5. OVERVIEW

02 min. reading time

Following the processes of initiating, designing, constructing and operating a stadium in previous chapters, Chapter 5 marks the start of the technical guidelines. These technical recommendations provide the detail of what should go into and around the major elements of the stadium. Before considering the individual needs of the main user groups, the technical aspects that go across the whole site or building, or affect multiple user groups, are addressed.

This chapter starts with a section containing technical recommendations for the areas immediately outside the stadium, its precinct and perimeter. It then moves inside the stadium to look at the details of spectator seating, whilst also acknowledging the preference for spectator standing areas in some scenarios.

Section 5.3 then deals with the detailed specification of the pitch as the field of play, including its dimensions and surrounding areas. This complements Section 2.4, which considered the design and construction of the pitch and the choice of surface.

The important aspects of safety and security and their resultant requirements in terms of systems and spaces are then examined. Signage is central to the user experience and also has a role to play in terms of safety, therefore Section 5.5 focuses on the topic of signage across the stadium site.

The chapter closes with two sections covering the fundamental systems and services on which any stadium building and operation relies. Section 5.6 considers key mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems such as power and water. The detailed specification of floodlighting is also included within this section. Finally, Section 5.7 considers key information technology (IT) systems and spaces.
