Economic Pillar

Adaptability of infrastructure and services

Objective: Promote the use of adaptable, efficient technologies and solutions to address demand variations before, during and after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

The adaptability of infrastructure and services material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:

Context

More than one million people visited Qatar during the 29-day event, with a cumulative attendance reaching above 3 million over the 64 games for an average match attendance of over 53,000. One of the unique aspects of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ was its compact nature, with all eight stadiums located within an hour’s journey time of central Doha, which allowed fans to easily move from one stadium to another and watch more than one match in a day. The footprint of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ was the most compact in modern history.

Hosting the tournament generated a significant spike in demand for public infrastructure, transport, accommodation, food and other types of services while staging the tournament. This presented a challenge for the host country to develop adaptable infrastructure and services that would successfully address the spike in short-term demand during the tournament while avoiding overdevelopment of sectors that may not experience the same demand levels after the tournament. The compact nature of the tournament, however, created opportunities to efficiently meet increased demand through the centralised provision of some services and facilities.
