Josoor Institute

Initiative description: Expanding and enhancing the Josoor Institute’s professional education, training and development programmes to build the capabilities of individuals and organisations in Qatar and the MENA region, deliver world-class, high-profile and sustainable sporting and leisure events.

The Josoor Institute is a Centre of Excellence inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC). Being an integral department within the SC, the Josoor Institute played an important role in the successful delivery of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, and in establishing a legacy in sports and events management delivery for Qatar and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. More generally, the Josoor Institute contributed to the delivery of the Qatar National Vision 2030 through building human capital and economic development. Since its inception in 2013, over 10,450 people have enrolled and benefited from one or more of the various education and training programmes offered by the Josoor Institute.

General professional development programmes and courses

Between 2016 and 2022, the Josoor Institute ran flagship professional diploma programmes in sports management and major events management, which benefitted over 470 graduates. The programmes were designed and delivered in partnership with SDA Bocconi School of Management, a leading business school with in-depth expertise in the sports and events industry.

In parallel, the Josoor Institute’s activities included an Executive Leadership Development programme (in partnership with Leaders in Sport). Between 2019 and 2022, 45 delegates completed this programme. In addition, an online series of webinars and panel discussions were delivered for specific audiences. This included SC staff and relevant stakeholders, as well as members of the public. Some of the topics discussed in the online sessions included: developments in the sports and events industry during the pandemic and other disruptive factors; the future of education; an array of topics on sustainability; and sports diplomacy. Nearly 2,800 delegates attended the sessions between 2019 and 2021.

Development of the volunteer training programme

The Josoor Institute also supported the development of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ volunteer training programme.

In the run up to 2022, the Josoor Institute continued to support role-specific and functional training of volunteers and workforce directly involved in the tournament, offering online certificates in both general and key areas of sports and event management across the region.

At the forefront of preparations for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, the Josoor Institute along with the Volunteer Management teams at the SC and FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22) developed the training content for the volunteer e-learning platform. Support and guidance were provided to the project teams regarding the development and structure of online volunteer training materials and knowledge dissemination activities. The resulting e-learning content that was developed enabled a world-class engaging and immersive volunteer learning journey. Community Leadership training programme

The Josoor Institute successfully delivered a Community Leadership training programme which benefitted over 350 community leaders in Qatar. The programme focused on a variety of key topics including leadership styles and the importance of creativity. The training had a practical element and community leaders were encouraged to apply the principles they learnt within their own communities and events, including the cultural activations during the FIFA Arab Cup 2021™ and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. For more information about these cultural activations, please visit the cultural event series web page of this report.

Drawing its inspiration from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy, the key objective of the course was to encourage learners to consider how a major sporting event can be used to build a legacy that improves efficiency, promotes conservation of resources, and adds significant value to the host community, country, and region. Participants learned about sustainable approaches to planning and infrastructure, water, waste, and air quality management; and explored and examined the legacy of major sporting events.
