Our Sustainability Strategy

Purpose of the Strategy

The purpose of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy, was to maximise the sustainability of the preparation, staging, and post-tournament activities of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ by fulfilling required obligations, managing risks and leveraging opportunities related to people’s rights and wellbeing, economic development and environmental protection.

Scope of the Strategy

The strategy set out the sustainability initiatives for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, linked to the most material sustainability topics for the tournament and built on the joint sustainability commitments set out in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Policy.

This joint strategy was a collaboration between the three tournament organisers, FIFA, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC (Q22) and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC). This collaboration enabled a wide range of sustainability impacts associated with the tournament to be addressed in the most effective and comprehensive way by leveraging the knowledge, experience and best possible resources available from all three delivery partners.

The strategy covered all three phases of tournament delivery – the preparation, staging and post-tournament activities of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ – from the time the strategy was developed to the completion of post-tournament activities in 2023.

The foundation of the strategy is the 20 material topics identified for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ that were addressed by 22 objectives. These objectives described the intended results from implementing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy. The objectives were organised according to the five pillars of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ sustainability framework.

The First Sustainability Progress Report was published in October 2020, detailing progress on delivering the commitments set out in the strategy. Throughout 2022 and up until 2023, real-time updates were provided through an online progress report.  This online report now represents the final FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Report.

Governance and development of the strategy

The development of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy was led by the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Sustainability Steering Group and the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Sustainability Working Group, with final approval provided by the FIFA Secretary General and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 LLC Chairman/ SC Secretary General.
