Environmental Pillar

Waste minimisation

Objective: Minimise waste sent to landfill from FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ sites and promote waste management and recycling solutions in Qatar.

The waste minimisation material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:

Context

The generation of significant quantities of waste occurs during every phase of a FIFA World Cup™, from preparation to staging to post-tournament activities. Key activities associated with the tournament that create waste include: construction and dismantling of stadiums, training sites and temporary infrastructure; dressing and signage; and food and beverage for staff, volunteers, contractors and spectators.

If not properly managed, this waste can have negative consequences for the natural environment and people’s health, contributing to ground and water pollution and the generation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If managed well, however, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ can be used as a catalyst to promote the development of improved waste management and recycling solutions in Qatar.

When the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy was published in 2019, Qatar’s recycling industry handled less than ten percent of waste generated in the country and it had set targets to increase solid waste recycling in the country to 15% by the end of 2022 as part of its National Development Strategy (2018 - 2022).

Initiatives

The waste minimisation objective was addressed through the following initiatives:

Waste management at tournament sites

Continuing to implement and enhance waste management in tournament site construction and implementing waste management systems for tournament site operations, so as to facilitate the avoidance, reduction, segregation, reuse and recycling of waste.
