Sustainability at the FIFA World Cup™

Sustainability framework

To deliver on the tournament organisers' shared vision, maximise the positive legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and set a new benchmark for the sustainability of mega-sporting events, a sustainability framework was established to guide the implementation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Policy. The framework forms the foundation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy which describes the sustainability initiatives being implemented during the preparation, staging and post-tournament activities of the tournament.

The sustainability framework included policy commitments, goals, material topics and strategic objectives organised according to five pillars: human, social, economic, environmental and governance. These framework pillars aligned with the three dimensions of sustainability and the human, social, economic and environmental pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030, with an additional pillar for governance which addressed the objective of ensuring good governance and ethical business practices.

In the process of developing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Strategy, a long list of sustainability topics (or impacts) associated with the tournament were identified, followed by a stakeholder consultation process in order to prioritise the most material areas so as to focus efforts/ resources and maximise the sustainability of the tournament. These 20 material topics helped to guide the development of the Sustainability Strategy which defined the initiatives that were implemented to effectively manage these material sustainability issues. Please refer to the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Strategy Process Development document for more details about this process.
