Updating the sustainability strategy

Initiative description: Periodically reviewing and updating the sustainability strategy to reflect evolving best practices and technologies in sustainable event management, and responding to changes in the internal and external context, and associated risks and opportunities. This includes a periodic review of the materiality assessment and human rights impact assessment and respective objectives and initiatives.

The development of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Strategy started in 2017 and built on the work started by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), as well as the experience of previous FIFA World Cups. A detailed publication of the process followed to develop the Sustainability Strategy is available here. While implementation started much earlier, the Sustainability Strategy and Policy were published in January 2020.

A review of the Strategy was carried out in 2021 and concluded that material issues, objectives and initiatives were still relevant. With the tournament fast approaching, it was decided that the focus should be on implementation as opposed to further updates. In addition, it was realised that most updates were needed in the way that initiatives were delivered as opposed to the contents of the overall strategy. Only minor typographical changes to the strategy were made since its publication as detailed in the dedicated change log section (Annexe 5) of the  Sustainability Strategy.
