Post-tournament sites and asset use
Objective: Facilitate the development of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ stadiums, training sites and assets for long-term community and business use.
The post-tournament sites and asset use material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:
Context
Qatar implemented an ambitious construction programme in the lead up to the tournament. This included the renovation and/or construction of eight stadiums in and around Doha, which represented one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country.
Enabling adequate long-term community and business uses for each of these assets, including for sports and future tournaments, is at the heart of the legacy of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. It is also aligned with the National Development Strategy aim to promote the sports and culture sectors as streams for national revenues to support the economic diversification objectives of Qatar. This includes identification of investment opportunities relating to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ sports facilities and strengthening the role of the private sector in seizing these opportunities.
While other infrastructure that was built in the lead up to the tournament was essential for tournament operations, it was planned around Qatar’s long term needs to achieve its development objectives before being awarded the right to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. This included major projects such as the Doha Metro, expressways, the new Hamad International Airport and its expansion, and a wide range of convention centres and hotels.
