Workforce development
Objective: Build local expertise to deliver the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and foster the development of the sports and events industries in Qatar and the region.
The workforce development material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:
Context
Through the development of local expertise and the attraction and retention of skilled expatriates, the tournament aimed to contribute to the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030 and to support Qatar’s desired transition to a more diversified, knowledge-based economy. Under the National Development Strategy (NDS) 2018-2022, Qatar sought to promote the sports and culture sectors to support the country’s economic diversification objectives. Qatar also aimed to increase the number of Qatari nationals in technical and managerial roles working in the sports sector by at least 5% annually from 2016 to 2022.
Hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ for the first time in the Middle East and Arab world presented a unique number of opportunities that contribute to the development of each individual involved in the project or in the local population, both in knowledge and gained skills, which ultimately contribute to their future employability, economic productivity and socio-economic status. The opportunities also supported the growth of entrepreneurship and economic diversification in Qatar. This impact is driven by formal training, on-the-job learning and post-tournament employment opportunities for employees, volunteers, and contracted and subcontracted workers associated with the preparation, staging and post-tournament activities of the tournament.
Key sectors supported by the capabilities developed through the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, in the host country and the wider region, include sports and event management, tourism and hospitality, food and beverage, transportation and logistics, waste management, construction, sustainability management and others.
