Youth education and empowerment
Objective: Empower young people in the region through football programmes and the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ platform.
The youth education and empowerment material topic aligns with the following UN SDGs:
Context
Hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ presented opportunities for young people to gain valuable skills and experiences through their participation in the tournament as volunteers. It also helped empower younger generations in Qatar and around the world through football-based community projects and football-for-development programmes. Given that young people between the ages of 15 and 29 make up nearly a third of the region’s population, and another third are below the age of 15, together amounting to more than 100 million people (Source: Arab Human Development Report 2016), this presented a key opportunity for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where youth development is a critical challenge.
Youth education and empowerment was also a key priority under Qatar’s National Development Strategy (NDS) 2018-2022, which seeks to ensure that young Qatari nationals are capable and qualified for an active role in society by developing the knowledge, skill and experiences needed and supporting their aspirations.
